The opportunities this year are amazing. I have the chance to be a part of one of the most historic elections in the history of our nation. Regardless of your political views, that fact can hardly be disputed. I hope to gain from my work on this campaign knowledge and experience I can use for the rest of my life.

Yeah, I've been slacking off on my posts. In my defense I've been getting home at 2-3 in the morning about everyday (4-5 in the east coast).

Just Arrived at My Hotel

I left this morning from Norfolk, VA at 10:35 and finally made it out here a little while ago, and I'm now sitting in my hotel room at the Doubletree.

Some of the highlights of my day so far:
1) I met the mayor of Cincinnati on accident. Nice guy.
2) I met Lucy Arce Ferrer, a senator from Puerto Rico and an amazing woman.
3) I took the wrong shuttle to the wrong Doubletree, though I did meet some interesting people from Southwest Airlines on the shuttle back to the airport.

One thing that is no good is the internet on my phone stopped working mysteriously and the hotel is charging internet, but this is my "free" day.

State Convention Part 2

One of my duties as a delegate for the national convention was to go to North Carolina's State Convention for a training class and the experience. This year the state convention was in scenic New Bern, and I was lucky because New Bern is pretty close to where I live now. Here's my account, in pictures.

Lovely New Bern, North Carolina - location of the 2008 North Carolina Democratic Convention and location of me after a "refreshing" early morning drive.

I arrived at the convention an hour or so before it started, and I spent that time helping one of the Bev. Perdue people and one of the John Brooks people set up their signs.

Once in the convention center there was the long hall way seen under the sailboat in the above picture. The hallway, I thought, represented one of the neatest things about the whole convention: capitalism. People were there with buttons, t-shirts, bumper stickers, hats, etc for the candidates and political ideas. Plus tables were set up for some political action groups, which I should have taken better pictures of. Upstairs from the room pictured above were classrooms where the classes I participated in - Grassroots and one about arguing the issues - took place.

The real exciting things didn't start until the convention started. The picture above shows the stage Chairman Meek and other speakers spook on, and the projector screen where relevant images and text were shown.

But everyone already knows there's going to be speakers and speeches at a convention. At the convention I saw (and participated in) one of the best examples of democracy open for everyone: adopting the state party's platform. Every resolution and idea for the party's platform was orated by Chairman Meek and every resolution and idea for the party's platform was open for amendments or discussion and then voted on. Everyone in that room had a voice if they wanted to speak it. I doubt most people even knew anyone could give a voice on any of the resolutions brought up. Truly an excellent day to be an American.

(if you're interested, Resolution 80 was not passed and in fact I was one of those who spoke against it)

A few hours after the convention ended began the second Sanford-Hunt Dinner, in honor of Terry Sanford and Jim Hunt, both governors of this great state and overall amazing Americans. (read the wikipedia page)

At the actual dinner the events included delicious food and awesome speakers, such as from the former Mississippi governor (and Obama supporter) and Jim Hunt himself. Overall, it was an excellent experience and a great way to top off the day.

Okay, WOW so last Saturday I was given the honor to represent the Obama voters and my district in general (3rd) in the Democratic National Convention.

I just sent a number of emails out to various groups. I plan on using this opportunity to reach out to my generation and get them involved in politics!

Here's the email:
" Hi and Hello,

My name is Jared Hagemann, and I am 18 years of age and stand as one of the youngest delegates to the Democratic National Convention. There is a major issue with my generation, and others, in which it is perceived that being involved in politics is out of reach, except to the privileged few. My standing as a delegate and my experience stands to shake that view and I know it is my duty to use my opportunities to set an example for my generation and all others to get involved, to vote, and to see the politics of our nation as a democratic process of the people by the people.

Giving me a chance for an interview or tv spot or something along these lines would set this example. It would show that anyone can get involved and anyone can be a part of politics. We are a nation of the people by the people, and it is my responsibility to help more people realize this, and I am willing to do what it takes.
